GPTU January meeting WEDNESDAY 28th MINUTES

  2. GPTU Minutes 26 November 2008:Agreed for accuracy
  3. Matters arising (not on Agenda)
    1. Noel Lynch still to be contacted re: Advice to Green party employees that they should all join appropriate Unions.
    2. R.Phoenix to be contacted re contacting AGC re minimum wages motions.
    3. Campaign against Climate Change March 6/12/2008.Took place probably fewer numbers than previous yrs.
    4. A message had been sent on behalf of GPTU calling on the Iranian president to commute the death sentence on Trade Unionist and teacher Farzad Kamangar. Further info needed
    5. Alan Wheatley reported non response from any elected Green to the "Writing off Welfare" paper written by him and Anne Gray. Paper posted on GPTU blog. Follow up considered.
    6. Fundraising Quiz successful, congratulations to all involved in organising.

    Costs of Publicising Jean Lambert meeting expected, New banner needs to be investigated, also leaflets could be running out by early summer. Summer fundraising event considered.

    1. Flyer prepared and revised version to be drafted after Consultation with D.Bates.
    2. new PDF needed to be put on line with link posted with new flyer

    1. GPTU supported Motions (Economics &: Migration)reported to be top of agenda.
    2. Many amendments to Economics motion reported; Sean Thompson to review and give guidance re voting.
    3. Not sure of position of maternity motion on agenda
    4. Emergency motion re Heathrow. P.Murry, A. Hewett and others to post drafts on lists. Technical info re damage and potential of alternative projects needed. Agreed to praise Climate change and other anti-runaway protestors not just J.McDonnell.
    5. Other emergencies on Royal Mail privatisation and PCS calls for more Job Centre workers noted.
    6. Fringes: proposed to have GPTU fringe on Welfare rights with Peter Allen, Alan Wheatley and Anne gray. Sean Thompson has booked an economics fringe, G.Left fringe on NATO.
    7. AGM: Sunday morning if possible.
    8. stall booked. P.Murry and Sue Tibbles to person but other volunteers needed. Items for sale and TU related publicity materials welcome.
  9. Report back from convention of left: A. Hewett reported back Manchester meeting on 24/2009 had been a little disappointing, but provided some opportunities for networking. Complaints re inconsistent chairing that did not take into account disabled people noted. Respect agreed to campaign in favour of Green candidate Peter Cranie in NW Euro constituency.

  12. Left Unity meeting 1pm Lucas Arms Grays Inn Rd wc1 (nr King´s X) 31/1/2009. A. Hewett to attend as GLeft rep, P.Murry as GLeft observer other GP members encouraged to attend.
  13. Support for Jerry Hicks; GPTU statement drafted by P.Murry:

    "The Green Party Trade Union Group does not seek to instruct Amicus members how to vote in their internal ballot, but notes that Jerry Hicks is reported to have made statements on environmental policy that GPTU would support. GPTU therefore asks Amicus members to consider this when choosing how to vote."

    1. A.Hewett drafting report on GPTU activities for Green Party Regional Council.
    2. GPTU urges members of unions affiliated to the Labour Party to apply opt out of making Political fund contributions to the Labour Party. Unite members need to write to their head office explicitly stating that they wish to do this, members of other Unions should check with their Head offices and branch Officers how to do this.
